Biography

"Fairy" is the meaning of her name in Swahili, which might have something to do with the magic she's able to conjure while performing. The youngest of four, Quvenzhané Wallis was born on August 28, 2003, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to proud parents Qulyndreia and Venjie Sr. Wallis.

Although Nazie, as her friends call her, wants to become a dentist when she grows up, she decided to audition for "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" at the tender age of five. Director Benh Zeitlin, who had been searching for the perfect girl to play Hushpuppy for over nine months and had already seen over 3.500 kids, was very impressed with Quvenzhané's audition. That's how she became the leading lady of "Beasts Of The Southern Wild". The movie was shot over a three-month period in 2010.

"Beasts Of The Southern Wild" premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2012 to rave reviews, winning the Grand Jury Prize. Later, in May 2012, Quvenzhané traveled to France for the premiere of the movie at the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival. The movie did amazingly and even won the prestigious Caméra d’Or for best first film. Over the months, many people got the chance to watch the movie, and Quvenzhané's performance left them all impressed; the critics everywhere haven't stopped going on and on about her incredible performance.

With a refreshing honesty, and a bubbly and fun personality to match her talent, Nazie leaves a lasting impression wherever she goes. This whole experience hasn't changed her; she stills loves dancing, singing, riding her bike and hanging out with her friends, and when asked if she was going to move to Hollywood or New York, she replied "No, they're gonna have to come to me".
